FULLERTON, California. Titan YDSA supports and endorses the Save Walk on Wilshire campaign, a movement led by individuals and businesses to keep Walk on Wilshire alive.
Walk on Wilshire is a walkable space made by closing a small segment of Wilshire Avenue west of Harbor Boulevard to motor vehicle traffic, only allowing pedestrians and cyclists. Since it was created a few years ago, it has become a central part of Downtown Fullerton, and is one of the only walkable spaces in Orange County outside of Downtown Santa Ana.
Pro-car groups have long tried to kill the project, and it has barely survived the City Council over the years. It was extended in 2022, but on July 16 this year, the City Council voted to put it on “life support”. The October 15 Council meeting will determine whether the project stays or is eliminated; if the community loses the vote then, the project is gone, and likely not to come back.
In our first General Meeting, Titan YDSA members discussed the importance of Walk on Wilshire – from what it means to them to how it affects the North Orange County community at large. Our endorsement of this campaign passed our membership unanimously, as we all want to see more walkable and community spaces that break down the need for car ownership in California.
We encourage everyone to come out to the October 15 Fullerton City Council meeting and make themselves heard to ensure that Walk on Wilshire stays for generations to come. We also encourage everyone to individually sign the Save Walk on Wilshire petition and contact the Fullerton City Councilmembers.
